Biopsychosocial Model

RecoveryVR offers all of its apps to everyone because we understand that a condition is rarely dictated by a single factor.

  • Bio (physiological pathology)
  • Psycho (thoughts emotions and behaviours such as psychological distress, fear/avoidance beliefs, current coping methods and attribution)
  • Social (socio-economical, socio-environmental, and cultural factors such as work issues, family circumstances and benefits/economics)

This applies heavily to chronic pain but physical fitness can also affect mental health and mental health can affect motivation to exercise.

RecoveryVR is committed to open delivery of all apps to all customers because you never know what might work.

Pain Management Apps

Based on the latest research coming out of Universities around the world, RecoveryVR is offering a range of tools designed to trick the brain, distract from flare-ups and disconfirm pain signals.

Graded Imagery
Distraction
Disconfirmation

1

Built for CRPS, Phantom Limb & Chronic Pain

Graded Imagery

Developed with he assistance of pain specialists we’ve taken visualisation techniques and made them immersive and prescriptible.

Sensation Imagery – Built for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Phantom Limb pain, we put the patient in a 360 video where they experience a set of hands and feet touching hot, cold, grass, water, other people and much more. The videos that can induce up to 7 out of 10 pain in a patient without them ever moving a muscle.

Graded Motor Imagery (coming soon) – Built for Chronic Pain, we allow a patient 1. watch a movement, 2. be immersed in the movement, 3. activate the movement and then 4. interact with the movement in a simulated environment. A clinician can step up the immersion as the patient becomes desensitised to the pain response at each stage.

2

Built to distract from flare ups

Pain Distraction

Based on the growing evidence that pain signals can be blocked by filling the cognitive load with other sensory inputs.

Travel – Visit countries all over the world such as Turkey, Norway or Italy by immersing yourself in 360 videos. Over 10 countries to visit with more than 120 videos and 2 and half hours worth of footage.

Games and Meditation – More pain distraction can accessed through the use of the physiotherapy and mental health apps.

3

Designed to trick the brain

Disconfirmation

Attempting to expose the cognitive dissonance between the pain in the body and the pain in the mind, we have developed a few tools to compare the expectation of pain and the reality of the patients action.

Mirror Box – We’ve taken the classic rubber hand experiment and made it immersive, layering the movement of one hand onto the opposite side of the body.

Gain Control (coming soon) – By controlling the visual and auditory inputs into the brain we can accelerate or slow down the perception of rotation of the neck and back.

Mental Health Apps

Offering elements of exposure therapy and stress relief. A clinician can use these environments to change the mood, decrease anxiety and increase the neuroplastic potential of a patient.

Guided Meditations
Phobia Exposure
Nature Therapy

1

Relaxing, empowering, engaging

Guided Meditation

Use these 20 guided meditations to relax the body, dial down pain, decrease anxiety and quiet the mind. RecoveryVR has 5 different guides delivering a range of mindfulness techniques and 50 locations to choose from so everyone can find something that works for them.

There is evidence to show that a brain with reduced stress has more potential for neuro-plastic change. We recommend some meditation before physical therapy to enhance potential outcomes.

2

Directed, safe, repeatable

Phobia Exposure

Exposure therapy allows a person with phobias to experience their fears in a controlled environment. This works to desensitise them to their anxiety or bring up their fear before talking about them during therapy sessions.

Currently RecoveryVR offers exposure to graded levels of heights, crowds, public transport and driving with more to be released soon.

3

Outside, quiet, centring

Nature Therapy

Walk along beaches, trails and waterways, or sit quietly in peaceful locations to relax and centre yourself.

Great for people stuck in bed or indoors. Also a great way to change the mindset or mood of a patient while in therapy.
